School buildings constructed from the 1940s through the 1980s reportedly relied on asbestos-containing materials throughout their mechanical systems. Boilermakers who serviced cast-iron and water-tube heating boilers, pipefitters who maintained steam distribution systems, insulators who applied and removed pipe covering and block insulation, and HVAC mechanics who worked on air handling units may have been exposed to asbestos fibers in school buildings across Illinois.

The Illinois EPA Asbestos Program oversees asbestos abatement in public buildings statewide, including schools subject to AHERA inspection. Asbestos-containing materials — boiler insulation, pipe insulation, floor tile, ceiling tile, spray fireproofing, transite board, duct insulation, and gaskets — were installed in school buildings constructed before the 1980s and have been removed or managed in place under federal AHERA requirements ever since.
